Masters of Indigenous Art: Over at Bearclaw Gallery Saturday is the opening of a powerful group exhibition of paintings and sculpture, including work by the late, great Alex Janvier, who will be up on the wall with fellow PNIAI artists.
Daphne Odjig, Carl Beam, Abraham Anghik Ruben, Jane Ash Poitras, Roy Thomas, Norval Morrisseau, Joseph Sanchez, Eddy Cobiness, Benjamin Chee Chee, Saul Williams and Johnny Inukpuk are all featured, with Sanchez doing a talk at 2 p.m.
Have a look at the art at bearclawgallery.com if you can’t make it, but is one’s worth the effort to catch in person.
Details: 1 p.m. – 4 p.m. through Oct. 2 and Bearclaw Gallery (10403 124 St.), no charge.
nanekawâsis (2024): Holding the theme, punchy local director Conor McNally presents this documentary portrait of the amazing Edmonton-born artist George Littlechild.
In the wretchedly all-too-common story of being separated from his family in childhood as part of the Sixties Scoop, Littlechild reconnected with his heritage as an adult, Cree culture the basis of his career as a visual artist and the lens through which he came to terms with his two-spirit identity.
The film played at the prestigious Inside Out Film Fest in Toronto, and its subject and director will be in attendance for a talk after.

Hideout Distro out: After eight years, one of the sweetest hyper-local retail spots ever is saying farewell to its cozy, pal-hang brick-mortar location, which stocks regional art, music, fashion, stickers, candle, incense … you name it.
“I won’t sugar coat it,” says owner Tory Cullen, “it’s been an absolute grind through COVID and the current state of the economy, and there are inevitably a few bad seeds in a bunch that can turn things pretty rotten sometimes.”
The local ecosystem is grateful to you, Tory, and 124 Street will be less sparkly as you convert to an online shop!
Anyone interested, please stop by the shop’s final day and say hello and thanks, see the Polaroid wall of animal pals one last time, and grab something before you leave!
Details: 12 p.m. – 5 p.m. at Hideout Distro (12407 108 Ave.), no charge
