Prairie Star Deck: With legendary aerosol murals of Worf and Spock around Edmonton, AJA Louden needs prove no sci-fi cred. We’ve also witnessed his Afrofuturism play large, including on the walls of Avenue Skatepark. But in his new, dedicated exhibition of work, Louden has levelled up straight into outer space, applying textile and tapestry skills honed at Fern’s School of Craft into pure expression that is nothing short of f-bomb jaw-dropping, easily some of the best art made around Edmonton in years. Talking about the cyclical nature of power and importance of craft in regional Black history, he’ll be at the opening — seriously be there before he ascends further.

The Invisible: On Film: Catalyst Theatre’s award-winning, country-touring musical triumph about six female Second World War Special Operative Executives has been captured for posterity on film. As our own Liane Faulder put it of the production, “There is a rare richness in The Invisible. It feels not only like an immensely entertaining musical, but a conversation about digging deep, and what matters.” Relive the evocative music, haunting sound, poetic text, dynamic choreography and stunning and surreal design, or just catch it for the first time in this one-night-only Citadel screening.

Better Off: One final mash-up of exceptional local talent: Ellie Heath’s beautiful new single is ours to watch in video form. Running around Edmonton in a wedding dress through dozens of familiar locations, Heath’s breakup song directed and edited by the mighty Mike Robertson is a very sweet dose of the summer vibe we’ve been waiting for. Even when it’s rainy, at least we have this bittersweet little pop song to hang out with.
