Year three back at the Roxy on 124 Street, Theatre Network presents the 29th annual Nextfest Emerging Arts Festival, an invigorating chance, to quote David Bowie, to watch the young advance in all-electric.
Running 11 days May 30 – June 9, over 500 artists are participating in 11 days of unleashed, next-gen artistic expression. The wide-ranging festival includes music, theatre, dance, visual art, film, Nite Clubs and workshops through some 50-plus events, performances and showcases.

“Take a risk on new works, make some memories and see creations that come straight from the minds of the next generation at Edmonton’s most unique annual multi-disciplinary arts festival,” says festival director Ellen Chorley in the program guide you can find at nextfest.ca, an ideal first stop to see what appeals.
The fest proper kicks off with the opening ceremonies at The Roxy (10708 124 St.) 7 p.m. Thursday, including the Cemetery Picnic handmade fashion show by Misery Moth and performances by Youth Spoken Word Choir, Jordyn Rayne, Willow Gladue, Sage Lavender and Vohon. Moody Lion, sweet name, will DJ the dance party.
Themed Nite Clubs run Friday and Saturday, dozens of emerging plays and play readings are on the various Roxy stages.
And next Thursday there’s a concert 7 p.m. at Helen Nolan Park (12327 108 St.) featuring IRE, Zia Baby CEO, Lawrence Teeth, Tamarack Cunningham and Billy Graham.
Ten dance productions curated by Good Women Dance Collective are also on offer, four film screenings, plus a series of digital works already up at nextfest.ca. Let’s not forget there’s also loads of visual art at The Roxy and in-area shops at Good Stuff, Mister Frame, Parcel & Prose and Vine Arts.
