National Drone Day isn’t about hovering little Star Wars robots, it’s about innovative sound.
Declared 10 years ago by Weird Canada’s Marie LeBlanc Flanagan, the event has spread wide over the years, including through numerous local events vibrating with sustained, experimental sounds, often delivered in a minimalistic form.

Here in Edmonton, the non-profit Boreal Electroacoustic Music Society (BEAMS) will commemorate this invented holiday (as they all are) on Saturday with a multi-headed hydra of hypnotic sound, music and visuals at Idylwylde Community Hall — 8631-81 St.

Starting at 3 p.m., the show featuring 12 artists will last till midnight.
Deploying everything from melodic tone to found-sound noise, the artists include Brick Road, Wayne DeFehr, Dinosaur Dragondrone, Jared Epp, Ghost Cars, Gray Hartley, Gary James Joynes, Matt McKenzie, Microenvironment, m.o.a.i.n., James Parrott and K.M. Toepfer.
Joynes, for example, will be performing an hour-long live, evolving drone set using only a modular synthesizer.
“The sounds are pretty rich and deep for sure,” says the ever-curious sound and visual artist also known as Clinker. “Very fun!”
He’ll also have a floating light sculpture rolling behind him, shards of slow-moving light beams through a thin haze.
“An experiment, but I think it will create a nice connection to the sounds I have been composing for this.”
You can read the descriptions for each of the artists’ sets at beams.ca and plan your visit.
Pay at the door, the show is free for Idylwylde Community League members, $10 for BEAMS members and $20 for the rest us — though this actually gets you a BEAMS membership, which, pardon the pun, sounds pretty awesome.
