With long winters no one quite wants to think of just yet, Edmonton is naturally a place of intense fandom, and of certainly more than mere sport.
Proving this point this weekend is the ever-escalating otaku jamboree of Animethon, the longest of its breed first held modestly at Grant MacEwan in 1994 with 80 attending its second year.
More than 15,000 fans of creativity from Japan and well beyond now attend the annual festival put on by the Alberta Society of Asian Popular Arts, flying in voice talent from around the world, hosting gaming tournaments, showing off new collectible merchandise and of course afterparties and concerts full of cosplay fashion from the attendees.

Special guests this year include Texas-born rapper and animator DEMONDICE, Japanese anime singer and voice actor Konomi Suzuki, anime theme-composers MYTH & ROID, and viral cosplayer Miura Ayme.
Gundam model displays, a Maid and Butler Café, and of course meet-and-greets for the stars are on offer — plus, a number of $3 games, including Kingyo Sukui (Fish Scoop), Gara Gara Japanese Spinning Lottery and Omikuji Fortune Sticks to foretell your future.
Whether you’re a lifelong fan or new to all of this beautiful chaos, the people-watching alone is worth the price of admission.
On that, while three-day passes have been sold out for a while, you can still get in daily for $55 Friday, $60 Saturday or $45 Sunday — children 12 and under free, PS — tickets at animethon.org.
The List is published every Thursday. If you have events you’d like amplified or have any corrections or updates, please email jfeniak@postmedia.com.
