Edmonton Oilers GM Ken Holland has yet to make a move on the final day of the NHL trade deadline. The reaction on social media has been generally sour.
Meanwhile, the Winnipeg Jets have traded for top winger Tyler Toffoli.

Most important deadline in Oilers franchise history and Oilers fans are forced to watch their GM stumble and fumble his way into retirement. Literally didn’t acquire a perfect piece for their needs up front to pay more for a piece he DIDN’T need up front.

I think it’s pretty clear the way we’ve been watching players audition on Leon Draisaitl’s right wing all season that they don’t have the ideal fit in their Top 6. That would have been a scoring right winger. Not exactly a ton of them on the market. Apparently the deal wasn’t there to be made. But I do view the moves he made as not flashy but functional. Right. They add experience. They add depth down the middle in Adam Henrique. They improved their penalty kill. Carrick is a guy that gives them some sandpaper in their Bottom 6 and they needed that.
Oilers fan Oliver @Oli_Oilfan
I think Ken Holland has done a good job and the Oilers are going to be the team to beat this year.
Oilers fan Madi 🧞♂️💂🏻 @Madi39
I’ll say this, Jeff Jackson not firing holland is just another typical oilers organization fail.
It’s actually ridiculous he let him go on this long.
Oilers fan Riley Witiw @RileyWitiw
I like the moves Ken Holland made this deadline… but I’m finding his overall roster construction at the end of his tenure quite wanting. Honestly, there are holes on this team that should have been filled at some point during the last 5 years.

If Holland refuses to go all in, might as well dump Ceci and Foegele to gain a couple picks for next year. Not winning a cup as is, might not even get out of the second round.
TSN’s Bruce Boudreau, former NHL coach.
I think Knoblauch has got them playing with four lines. They’re slotted in the right spots. I think for that reason they can advance to at least the third round.
Oilers fan X- Connors Better…. @marten_ferguson
Terrible..if this is all he is doing… filled one need and we get to watch a Colorado, Vegas, LA torch our “top” d pairing again and again and again
Oilers fan whiskey please 🇨🇦 @Pilkey77
Holland landed us a 3rd line centre and a 4th line player. We still need a Ceci replacement and a top 6 winger that can play with Dri. The most glaring need was and is a Dman that can replace Ceci and the 1st rounder should of been used in that.
Oilers fan My Corsi says im good @Jfmj93
Oilers fans having a civil war in regards to deadline trades.
Me, only worried about playoff officiating continually derailing the Oilers.
TSN’s Mike Johnson, former NHL player.
They (the Oilers) are very strong, they’re analytically one of the best teams in the league. The last two playoffs that pairing of Nurse and Ceci went up against (Nate) MacKinnon, they lost badly in that match up. Last year they went up against (Jack) Eichel, they lost badly in that match up. Now I don’t know if Desharnais and Nurse is the answer. Ceci and Nurse. But I’m worried about if they get Eichel and Stone again, if they lose that match up badly against a team as good as Vegas, that’s going to be trouble for them… As good as their overall numbers are, that second pair defence against a really good team can be an issue.

I liked the big trade. The problem though is two years in a row they were to be all in and two years in a row we’re going to hear about the limited cap as the reason. Nurse (bad contract) Brown, Campbell swing and misses, those 3 signings are the main reason and, nobody
Oilers podcaster Zach Wheel @ZWheel97
In a vacuum Stetcher, Carrick and Henrique is good.
We do not live in a vacuum and by not addressing top 6 RW and/or a top 4 RHD, Oilers management is failing the players.
If Vegas isn’t satisfied then Edmonton shouldn’t be either. It should be a a relentless pursuit.
Oilers fan Jake @OilAcumen
If the Oilers really are done, I’d still feel ok with what they’ve accomplished.
Since the streak they’ve added:
Perry
Henrique
Carrick
Stecher
7th rounder
And given up:
A 1st rounder and three 4th round picks
That’s not bad at all IMO
Oilers fan Rory Williamson @RoryCWilliamson
I don’t understand how any Oiler fan is okay with this deadline? We are going into the playoffs with the basically the same team outside 2 forwards as last year that got SMOKED by vegas and barely won the kings series.
Perry and Henny don’t move the needle at all

Oilers fan Go Oilers!!! @44972974Oilers
I understand why fans are upset, and people can “quit” on the Oilers if they want (they’ll be back soon enough). I’m never going to quit on this team. I didn’t when they were 2-9-2 and I sure as hell am not going to now no matter what happens before the deadline. Let’s Go Oilers!
Zach Laing of Oilers Nation @zjlaing
the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.
the oilers need to make a move, and at this point, i think even a “lateral” move could be an upgrade. we’ve seen three postseasons of nurse-ceci losing the war.
Oilers fan Dennis King @DKingBH
Holland is more of a politician than he is a hockey manager. And he’s really good at politicking and everyone likes him. But he’s way in over his head in 2024… I saw Foegle take ownership for his gaffe and he said he will be better. 468 GP says he won’t be. He won’t rewire his brain to make better decisions. He won’t learn how to pass the puck. Oilers really needed to move on from him and Ceci. We know how it ends with them
TSN’s Wayne Simmmonds, NHL player.
I’m looking at Edmonton’s third line and a guy in Foegele who I think has had a really good year this year. He’s starting to play a really heavy game, take pucks to the net. Honest to god, and I’m not trying to sound like a fool, but there’s sometimes I turn on the TV and he’s just flashing across the team and I think it’s McDavid. Then you add Perry there and I think they’ve done a great job supplementing their Bottom 6 and I think that’s going to help them win.

That Toffoli deal is funny. First, Edmonton could have easily done that if they were truly all in.
Next, remember the reported ask? Someone was pumping those numbers up. Cannot take insiders very seriously it turns out.
Oilers fan @island_oiler
Well-I was waiting to make a post till I saw what we did-
Apparently Holland is done.
Yup. Done.
If he thinks that was good enough- I..I just don’t know what to say.
Don’t mind what we did do- but extremely disappointing we didn’t do more.
I don’t see a path to the finals 🥺
Oilers fan Karman Gill @Kgill39
I’ve defended Ken Holland for his whole tenure and have liked his moves, including the Henrique one. But, turning a blind eye to a weak D core and doing practically nothing to help the team for a Cup Run is inexcusable.
I’m done with his sense of thinking
Edmonton Jounal hockey writer Jim Matheson @jimmathesonnhl
I think the Oilers need one more D, presumably a left shot, more experienced than Broberg who. Maybe bigger than Stecher but choices are dwindling.
TSN’s Cheryl Pounder, Team Canada gold medal winner
Ceci as a top four, that’s a question mark for me. I would have liked to see a move on defence.

The Oilers counter getting absolutely run over by Vegas in the playoffs last season by adding a couple depth pieces
McDavid and Draisaitl I am so sorry
Hockey fan Resplendent Beetle @rangerbob94
The Oilers are playing with fire here. Healthy Vegas is scary; even getting LA for the 3rd straight time round 1 may not end well; eventually the worm turns and those last 2 series were close. A 1st round exit is catastrophic IMO and quite likely as it stands.
Oilers fan WheatNOil @WheatNOil
Oilers seem like they’re done.
Adding Henrique, Carrick, and Stecher. I’m pretty positive about two of those adds and meh on Carrick.
Feel like they needed another addition to be a great deadline given the competition and contract cycle they’re in.
Oilers fan Robert Parks 🌻 @robertparks247
I think I’m getting tired of the Ceci derangement syndrome on Oilers Twitter.
The hate for Ceci is a little over the top folks.
Oilers fan Jeremy Thompson @Imahockeyguy
Ken Holland will retire this season either a loser, or the luckiest guy in the world. Either way his legacy as an elite team builder died in 2008.

TSN’s Craig Button
When they stay committed to their structure, they suffocate teams defensively. They’v learned how to take pressure off of Ceci and off of Nurse and off their bottom pair. And I think by having a deeper group up front that allows them to push the play against the other team instead of having to absorb it. And when they have been that committed and that good this year, in my view there hasn’t been a better team. And that’s what they’ve got to do come playoff time.”
