Ivonne Martinez, president of the Alberta Liquor Store Association, spoke out against these licensed locations when they were first opened in 2021, expressing concern that the format of these 7-Eleven locations could hurt the bottom line of local shops.
“We think that this is the beginning of a slippery slope where we’re going to find independents suffering because they don’t have the margins of the big stores,” she said.
“How do small restaurants feel about the fact that 7-Eleven put (some) chairs up, three little tables, and they call themselves a restaurant? It doesn’t make any sense to us.”
There are now 19 licensed 7-Eleven locations in Alberta, seven of which are in Edmonton. The first licensed location in Alberta was opened in Edmonton in 2021, at 389 91 Street SW, with four more locations in 2022, and another in 2023.
